Each winter, Avignon becomes the capital of contemporary dance with the emblematic Les Hivernales festival, with shows, lessons and exhibitions taking place in and outside of Avignon.

The place to be in the heart of winter!

The festival Les Hivernales was started in 1979, and has become a founding, grounding event for contemporary dance in France. Ever since the very first year, the festival and its founder, Amélie Grand, took a very specific approach. The dancers invited also gave classes and workshops for all levels, or courses reserved for professionals, during the day, and they performed their choreographies in the evening. In that way, the festival became a drive belt linking amateurs and professionals.

In its yearly programming, Les Hivernales has invited countless choreographers whose creations have presented a wide range of choreographic art. One of the festival's main objectives has been to reflect the vitality of contemporary dance.

For 2 entire weeks, all the wealth of contemporary dance is on stage in and around Avignon.
