Vaison-la-Romaine
Carmen' Abou Lagraa Tunis Opera Ballet - Festival Vaison Danses
Wednesday 22 July 2026 from 10 pm.
Event in Vaison-la-Romaine :
Created in 1875, Georges Bizet's "Carmen" is one of the most performed operas in the world. A sensitive and intensely lively piece of music, it inspires Abou Lagraa to reinterpret this comic opera, which has become part of our collective memory.
In a deliberately uncluttered set - with no scenery, only lighting by Alain Paradis - dance and music become the only languages. The spectator's gaze is invited to focus on the essential.
Here, Carmen is no longer a fantasized or sacrificed heroine. She is the embodiment of freedom. Rejecting the tragic fate and feminicide that befell the original character, the choreographer asserts a resolutely contemporary vision: women and men are equal, free and united. "We are all Carmen", says Abou Lagraa.
In a poetic universe nourished by Mediterranean references and Eastern influences, the piece brings out not one Carmen, but a plurality of versions of the character. The 11 dancers from the Ballet de l'Opéra de Tunis - whom we welcome to Vaison Danses for the first time - give body to these "Carmencitas", between desire, sensuality and vitality.
Based on continuous mass movement, the choreography resonates with the strength of the Mediterranean, a living link between the Maghreb and Europe.
