Avignon
The Girl of the Regiment
From Saturday 30 to Sunday 31 January 2027 on Saturday from 5.30 pm. On Sunday from 4 pm.
Event in Avignon :
A participatory opera based on Gaetano Donizetti’s two-act opéra-comique, *La Fille du régiment* (1840).
*La Fille du régiment* is one of the most sparkling operas in the repertoire. Behind its virtuosic arias and joyful energy, Donizetti tells the story of Marie, a young woman raised by a regiment of soldiers. When her past resurfaces, she finds herself confronted with a world very different from her own: that of an aristocracy with strict rules and well-established codes.
This interactive production invites audiences to rediscover the work through a playful and inventive lens, inspired by children’s imaginations. Their ability to blend different worlds and transform everyday objects fuels the staging here. The stage thus becomes a playground where elements metamorphose, scales are distorted, and visual surprises play a full part in the narrative.
At the heart of the story, the clash of opposing worlds gives rise to both comedy and emotion. Caught between the warm-hearted regiment that raised Marie and the more rigid world of the nobility, the young heroine must find her place and understand what truly constitutes her family.
Combining humor, tenderness, and collective adventure, *La Fille du régiment* is an invitation to experience opera in a new way: as a moment of play, imagination, and interaction between the stage and the audience.
