Find out more
Founded in 1983 to offer a venue dedicated to young audiences during the Festival Off in Avignon, the Totem, formerly called the 'Maison du théâtre pour enfants', has gradually grown and matured into a year-round theatre with performances and activities for all ages.

Today, Le Totem is a non-profit association which offers a range of activities designed for youth and children starting at a very early age, and for families. Programming includes performances, artistic and cultural educational activities in relation with partners from throughout the Grand Avignon conurbation and the county of Vaucluse. Le Totem also gives support to creations by hosting theatre companies in residence and providing production assistance. It coordinates the Festo Pitcho festival and organises programming during the Avignon Festival Off.
Le Totem is a theatre accredited by the French government for children and youth. It plays an important structural role on the cultural and artistic scene for young audiences. Its work in developing new creations and the great visibility it provides to companies whose work is performed during the Avignon Festival Off makes it a strong vector for the dissemination of works dedicated to young audiences, influential on both the national and international level.

Currently, the theatre creations dedicated to children and youth are among the most abundant and diverse, teeming with imaginative approaches and ideas that bring young spectators into relation with the rest of the world.

The highly diverse mix of aesthetics, the boldness and the inventivity of the artists working on the current scene have turned creations for youth into a veritable art in its own right, an art form that has shed the confines of its status as a minor art to earn and receive the laurels it well deserves. Artists addressing children and youth know how to come into resonance with society. Their artistic work provides symbolic, philosophical and political reflection that is of dire necessity in the world we live in.

Le Totem is a free space to be defended and promoted so that artists' work continues to be food for thought, a source of pleasure, sharing and amazement.

This is the free space in which Totem develops its work and its projects.
