Built on a rocky spur, the best way to discover the village in all of its splendour is to take the road from Sault. Coming out of a turn, it suddenly attracts your eyes, as suspended on its rock and exalted by a lavender field that blossoms in July and August.

Along the picturesque narrow streets and squares, you will find a few old houses that bear witness to the medieval origin of the village. The square tower of the castle and its surrounding wall with loopholes remain from this period. The 12th century church is crowned by a square bell tower covered with glazed tiles. Two other 17th century chapels are located outside the village, one in the hamlet of Les Crottes, and the other in Ventouret, restored in 2000. There is also a centuries-old wash house above the gardens.
The Nesque river, which once powered some twenty mills, rises in Aurel.
