The village of Aurel
Tourist service in Aurel :
Built on a rocky spur, this picturesque village reveals its full beauty when approaching from Sault. Nicknamed the "village of painters," it has inspired renowned Provençal artists such as René Seyssaud and Pierre Ambrogiani, who set up their studios here for a time in the 20th century.
Along the charming alleys and picturesque squares, old houses with beautiful stone-framed windows stand as a testament to the village’s medieval origins. Traces of the 13th-century castle remain, including the square tower, once the original keep, and its polygonal enclosure punctuated with arrow slits. The 12th-century Church of Saint Aurèle features a square bell tower adorned with glazed tiles. Above the gardens, a beautifully restored 19th-century washhouse adds to the village’s timeless charm.
Two otherchapels ( 17th-century )are located outside the village: the Saint Esprit Chapel in the hamlet of Les Crottes and the Ventouret Chapel on the road to the Mont Ventoux.
The Nesque River, which powered around twenty mills in the 19th century, has its source in Aurel.
