It was built starting in 1305 near the tomb of Pierre de Luxembourg.under orders from the anti-pope Clement VII and the King of France Charles VI. The church later held many relics and tombs of illustrious persons.

The Célestins convent was the last institution founded by the Avignon papacy, and was the only royal foundation in the pontifical city. The convent was the richest convent in Avignon. Today it remains the least deteriorated of the monastic establishments, and still has its church, cloister and most of the regular buildings.

The church was registered as a historical monument on 8 June 1914. Because the church housed many relics over the centuries, the adjoing square has been called Place des Corps Saints (Square of the Holy Bodies) since 1843.
