Théâtre du Chêne Noir
Tourist service in Avignon :
A creative company, the Théâtre du Chêne Noir is also an emblematic and permanent cultural venue in Avignon, located in the former Sainte-Catherine chapel near the Palais des Papes.
A historic setting
The setting here is not insignificant. A 12th-century chapel, a vestige of the cloister where the Cistercian nuns of Montdevergues, renowned for treating and confessing leprosy patients, once officiated. Bare stone converses with red velvet armchairs and stage lighting. An ogival apse with exceptional acoustics. A sculpted stone rose window on the façade. Step inside, you're at the heart of Avignon's history...
Creation and popular theater
The company founded by Gérard Gelas in 1971, one of the pioneers of the Off Festival, and now directed by Julien Gelas, brings this permanent fixture in Avignon to life, presenting the biggest names on the French stage as well as up-and-coming young talent, and welcoming tens of thousands of spectators every season.
Dedicated to creation and popular theater, it's a theater of the four seasons, open all year round, with a short respite in August after the festival. It's an open space for exchange and encounters between artists and audiences.
Spaces with a wealth of resources
The theater has two rooms and a courtyard that can be used according to your needs.
The Salle Léo Ferré: its tiered seating, installed in the former Saint-Catherine chapel, can accommodate 288 people.
The John Coltrane room: equipped with a stage and bar, it can be set up in different configurations according to your needs: as a show with bleachers (capacity of 120 people), as a cabaret with small tables (60 people seated), or any other configuration (around 100 people standing).
When the weather's fine, the Cour Antonin Artaud offers an intimate place to enjoy a drink, share post-show impressions, meet the artists...
