Cavaillon
Arc Romain de Cavaillon
Tourist service in Cavaillon :
The Roman period left the town of Cavaillon with a very beautiful arch dating back to the very first years of the Christian era. This Roman arch was built based on a square plan and was meant to be located in the town centre and not on the outskirts as is the case in Orange or Saint-Rémy. This edifice marks a main intersection and entrance into a privileged area. The arch was originally in the heart of the Roman and Medieval town, before being moved to the Clos square between 1876 and 1880. Today, there is much debate whether the arch should be put back in its original place. The fact remains that this arch is the only remaining testimony of the Roman Empire and its ambitious town planning schemes.
