Le Grenier à sel

Conceived as a space for cultural hybridization and effervescence, Grenier à sel explores new creative perimeters, those based on the strong permeability between art, science and technology. The Grenier à sel encourages new forms of collaboration between artists, researchers and economic players, enabling the production of original works that shed light on our understanding of the world today and its mutations.
With exhibitions, performances, residencies, shows, workshops and encounters, the Grenier à sel program offers artists, partners and audiences a platform for emotion and reflection, to invent and dream the world of tomorrow.

This former city salt granary, whose origins date back to the 14th century, is located in the heart of Avignon, right next to the Palais des Papes. Demolished several times, it was rebuilt in 1758 by architect Jean-Ange Brun and classified as a historic monument in 1984, before being restored by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte in 1989. Facing the Rhône with its handsome Louis XV facade, its architecture and layout recall the importance of salt in Ancien Régime society.
