The Chapel of Saint Symphorien is a 12-century Romanesque chapel, built at the peak of the Provençal Romanesque style. It was no longer used as a parish church as of the 14th century due to its remote location. The era was full of dangers and people could no longer safely travel to the chapel.
Chapel can only be seen during the European Heritage Days
This chapel was a Priory in the 12th century. The popes added it to the Charterhouse monastery in Bonpas. A beautiful example of pure Romanesque style, the peak of Provençal Romanesque architecutre. There is a single nave with 4 bays. Pointed barrel vault. The apse is a semi-dome inside and is 5-sided from the outside. The pillars in the apse are beautifully carved with two rows of acanthus leaves in the Roman style. There is also a small bell tower, and under the chapel there is a crypt dug into the rock.
