Vallis Clausa - Paper Mill
Tourist service in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse :
Paper is made from rags in tanks, as it was in the 15th century. Visit the paper-making area, the large shop with engravings and poems printed on the handmade paper.A bit of background: the first paper mill in Provence was opened in Carpentras in 1374. However, Fontaine de Vaucluse became the biggest paper making site over the following centuries. The arrival of the Popes in Avignon in the 1300's doubtlessly had an influence on the thriving paper production in the area.
