For the Grande Chapelle in the Palace of the Popes, artist Yan Pei-Ming has painted three monumental works that convey all the theatricality of the complex history of the papal presence in Avignon in the Middle Ages, and that resonate with the world we live in today.
On the West wall hangs a self-portrait portrayed in three persons. In the centre, the artist is withdrawn and meditative, wearing a white cassock and seated on a throne which could be the throne of Pope Innocent X. On each side is a self-portrait of the artist in ordinary clothing in everyday situation. He seems dubious, or fierce, or bad, it is not easy to tell. Above the altar is a Crucifixion scene that incorporates his portrait in the face of Christ suffering. His downward gaze takes the viewer downward, to the bottom of the south wall of the Grande Chapelle and the immense painting of Exodus, filled iwth bats which strikingly bring to mind the Bestiaries of the Middle Ages, while also echoing past and current history of great migrations.

40 works by the artist from a 40-year career were exhibited at the Lambert Collection from June 26 to September 26.

Curator general: Henri Loyrette
Associate curators: Dominique Vingtain, curator, Palace of the Popes, and Stéphane Ibars, artistic director, Collection Lambert.
