Event in Avignon :

Artificially sweetened, diverted, falsified, travestied, truth today seems to only be approached through a series of fictional representations that seek to reach different crowds of people its message has been designed for.

Many artists in the early days of this century have placed in perspective the tension between what is real, reality's spectacular or warped representation, and its transposition into imaginary events ...
By infiltrating the devices and the narratives implemented in the world of mass imagery (cinema, press, urban legends), by designing works that can be interpreted in multiple ways, enabling viewers to take critical distance from the representation of reality as it is imposed on us, and by working with reality in its roughest form, the works by the artists displayed in this exhibition invite the viewer to doubt about the nature of the images that face us, to deconstruct the mechanisms of restrictive representations, and to become liberated subjects.

Artists: Carlos Amorales, David Askevold, Joseph Beuys, Pierre Bismuth, Christian Boltanski, Slater Bradley, Pavel Braila, Marcel Broodthaers, David Claerbout, Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain, Anna Gaskell, Kendell Geers, Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Thomas Hirschhorn, Jenny Holzer, Jonathan Horowitz, Koo Jeong A, Barbara Kruger, David Lamelas, Louise Lawler, Richard Long, Hamid Maghraoui, Fiorenza Menini, Mariko Mori, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Anri Sala, Charles Sandison, Richard Serra, Vibeke Tandberg, Salla Tykkä.
