Avignon
United Dances of America
From Saturday 17 to Sunday 18 May 2025.
Event in Avignon :
Three American choreographers, three different perspectives, but the same fervor for denouncing confinement, whether physical or social, and exploring the liberating power of dance.
Each piece is a declaration of artistic independence, dedicated to the universal quest for freedom, authenticity and identity.
Drawing on her African-American roots, emerging Chicago choreographer Rena Butler reveals the ambiguity and violence of codeswitching: to survive in our society, you have to set aside your identity and conform to the dominant norms! Carried by the energy of urban music, This That and the Third is a powerful metaphor for the struggle for authenticity and freedom.
Holy is a duet created by Mike Tyus and his partner Luca Renzi at the LA Dance Project in 2023. It's an intimate and singular work, based on a poem by Allen Ginsberg (a leading figure in the hippie movement and American counter-culture). Delicate and striking, Holy invites us to a deep immersion in the spiritual and sacred dimension of the human experience, the ultimate freedom.
Stephen Shropshire presents Mythology, a piece that highlights the masterly alliance of three major arts: the letter-poem by Sam Melville (political prisoner and leader of the Attica prison insurrection) reveals all its emotional power in Frédéric Rzewski's music, and resonates fully in Shropshire's frantic choreography.
WARNING for ages 16 and up. Certain scenes of nudity may offend the sensibilities of younger audiences.
