This painting of a red-headed woman, in a blouse, with her hair slightly tousled, selecting a necklace to wear, was painted in 1867. The dark background enhances the peraly complexion of the woman and the vapourous fabric of her blouse. Here, Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) joins a tradition that enables him to create the effects of matter that he loves. This portrait is less provocative than some of the nudes from his earlier days; it possesses a special grace that is slightly melancholy. He refers back to the "bewelled woman" dressed in diaphanous clothing, such as the clothes designed by Jacques Doucet, the inventor of haute couture and the collector of the works displayed at the Museum.
This painting is displayed near the Cézanne ("Nature morte au pot de grès", 1873) and the Vuillard ("La Porte entrebâillée", 1891), where it emphasizes the rapid transformation of painting that was going on in the last decades of the 19th century, when modern painting was being invented.
