This exhibition shows many different traces from centuries past, left by the guests who stayed in this timeless home, reflecting the social and intellectual life that has driven the Palais du Roure over the centuries. In the 15th century, a soon-to-be pope celebrated Mass here. The King of France and his mistress stayed here one century later, and closer in time to us, in the late 1800s, Frédéric Mistral, Nobel prize for literature and founding father of the Provençal Renaissance, founded his journal here. Indeed, the Baroncelli family, who owned the Palais du Roure from the mid-1400s to the early 1900s, was an important facet of Avignon high society. The Palais du Roure continued to wield influence under Jeanne de Flandreysy, and was a frequent meeting place for intellectuals. Jeanne de Flandreysy, a muse from Edwardian era, used her beautiful home to hold conferences, receptions, concerts and congresses bringing together university scholars, curators, historians, authors... At one point Jeanne hosted poet Louis Le Cardonnel and poet Léo Larguier, and the painter Henry de Groux, who left significant works to the Palais du Roure.
Thus, the Palais du Roure was continually teeming with prolific cultural and social life and hosted the great minds of its times. Today it is part of Avignon heritage, and continues its vocation as an intellectual centre for visitors and researchers.
