Cabu, freehand sketches of the theatre - Maison Jean Vilar
Saturday 1 Sept. to Friday 21 Dec, Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 6pm except on public holidays.
Exhibition of freehand sketches by the celebrated illustrator Cabu, great theatre-lover in general and fan of the Festival d'Avignon in particular. No charge.
Cabu, known and celebrated for his illustrations in Hara-Kiri, Charlie Hebdo and the Canard Enchaîné, was also an avid theatre-goer where he sketched away. Since the 1960's, Cabu went to the theatre several times a week, in particular to the Comédie-Française.
He came for the first time to the Festival d'Avignon in 1970, when Jean Vilar was still at the helm. Several sketchbooks overflow with his impressions of the Festival.
He sketched the In, the Off, the streets of Avignon, the Honour Courtyard, the atmosphere, the festival-goers, the actors. His relentless gaze took it all in, his observations are both critical and enthusiastic.
Some of the sketches at Maison Jean Vilar have come from the exhibition on Cabu: "Vive les comédiens - 200 dessins pendant l'entracte" currently on display at the Comédie-Française.
