Courthézon stands in the cool atmosphere of the banks of the Seille and the Rhoannel, peaceful streams that are a paradise for mallard ducks and fishermen. Out in the country, the River Ouvèze encircles the town. The richness of the land produces Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône wines. The wine cellars of Courthézon are truly prestigious ambassadors, attracting an international clientele.
This is one of the oldest farming villages in Europe. Archaeologists have discovered Neolithic sites in Courthézon dating from 6000 B.C.
The church dates back to the period of Charlemagne.
The Ramparts encircling the old village, with their medieval gates, were built in the 12th century and magnificently restored in the spirit of and respect for their times by Bâtiments de France. They are beautifully floodlit at night, and are the proud remains of the glorious era of the Princes of Orange, who ruled over Courthézon.
In the 19th century, Elie Dussaud, a native of the region, a dock builder and entrepreneur, chose Courthézon as his place of residence, and built Château Val Seille here. This “Little Provençal Versailles” has been the Courthézon town hall since 1956, and is among the most beautiful town halls in the region, with its magnificent park and the singer Michèle Torr as its the patroness. At night, it is dressed in blue light, becoming a fairy tale palace and hosting, during the summer months in its open-air theatre, a large number of free and varied performances.
In November, motor car fans arrive from all over France and meet up in and around Courthézon to watch or take part in the French Rally Championships.
