Hike - Around the Gourgues and the Fairy Pillars
Takes 1 1/2 hours - Distance: 2.5 km Easy - Under 50 meters altitude change - - Marked blue then red on wood signs – Leave-park: parking lot at Mille Couleurs - D22. In the heart of the Provençal Colorado, this short walk takes you into the centre fo the old ochre quarries, and walks along traces of the mining activity, by the eroded earth pillars, red sands, the Sahara trail, and the Gourgues stream and box canyon.
The hike goes by the old pumping station, silent testimony to the former industrial activity in these ochre lands in the Luberon. The work done by man and the erosion carved by the wind and rain have shaped the rock here, Man mined this area during the 19th century and up until the 1930's. Walk through white oak forest, heather and chestnut, and come upon the big earth pillar, so fragile and tall. A lunar landscape with shadow and light, white and red sands. Sandstone rock. After the earth pillars, the walk goes along the Gourgues spring or you can take the Sahara trail. The Gourgues box canyon has imposing red and white cliffs. It was the last site to be mined here. The trial then continues along the Doa spring, with a waterfall and maritime pine. A landscape straight from a Western. Please stay on the path in order to preserve and protect the fragile environment. You can alos visit the Bruoux mines in Gargas, the village of Roussillon and the Ochre Conservatory in Roussillon - they are all part of this land of gold and red sands.
