Rock climbing in Provence: fabulous opportunities

Rock climbers know that Vaucluse mecca for climbers, with outstanding sites and a climate that makes Vaucluse a choice destination all year long.
In the heart of the Luberon range, the Buoux climbing site is known the world over for its challenges and pleasures. Other sites such as the Dentelles de Montmirail, where there are equipped routes on both the north and south sides, draw outdoor rock climbers throughout the entire year.

Buoux
Aiguebrun site

Buoux is a legendary cliff which was extremely popular in the late 1980’s. Famous for its pitted limestone, Buoux offers some of the most beautiful routes to be had in the southeast of France, and attracts climbers from the four corners of the earth !
Technical information : 300 routes, gravelly limestone rock, height 100m, southern exposure, difficulty 4 to 8c.

 

 

Dentelles
de Montmirail
(Lafare, Gigondas)

The Dentelles de Montmirail scarcely need to be introduced – their finely chiseled peaks which rise above the vineyards are known the world over. Three ranges oriented east-west make up the Dentelles de Montmirail: the Grand Travers, Gigondas and the Clapis.

Technical informations : maximum height 80m, every exposure. Limestone rock. School rock and major routes. Difficulty: 3+ to 8b+.

 

 

Saint Léger
du Ventoux
La Baleine site

Over 200 equipped routes.
Difficult (nothing under 6). Height 25 to 40 m, primarily one south face and one north face. Difficulties 6a to 8c
Height 35m, every exposure. Difficulties 6a to 8c

 

 

Venasque

A challenging, highly personal cliff, fairly technical due to the rock structure with several horizontal holds). Magnificent views of Mont Ventoux and the hilltop village of Venasque
Technical Information : Hmaximum height 25m southeast and eastern exposure, Difficulty 4c to 8B. Topographical map available at the Tourism Office (1.50€).

 

 

Saint Jacques hill in Cavaillon

Saint Jacques hill provides several quality routes and is yet very close to the center city of Cavaillon ! Ideal for families and beginners.
Technical information15 to 35 m, east and west exposure, 3 to 7c.

Combe Obscure

Height 40m, southeast exposure, difficulty 3 to 7b.

 

 

Oppède le Vieux

Height 25 m. south and west exposure, beginners, Difficulty 3+ to 7a.

Height 15m, south east exposure, Difficulty 4+ to 7a

 

 

Apt : Pont Julien

Height maximum 20m, every exposure, Difficulty 3 to 8b+

 

 

Fontaine de Vaucluse

Height 15m, south east exposure, Difficulty 3 to 6

 

 

Malaucène, Le Grozeau

Over 50 routes, 5b to 8c, height maximum 30 m, northwest exposure
