Avignon tourisme in the town of culture

Selected as the European Capital of Culture in the year 2000, ranked as UNESCO World Heritage, Avignon is home to extraordinary architectural heritage that reflects its long and varied history. Avignon was already an important crossroads in the 12th century, due in part to the role played by its bridge, the famous Pont d'Avignon, which spanned the Rhône. With the arrival of the Popes in the 14th century, Avignon became a second Rome, and remained a pontifical possession until the French Revolution.
