Usine d'ocre Mathieu ROUSSILLON

Provence cycling

To better understand the industrial adventure of ochre which completely transformed the Vaucluse landscape from Roussillon to Rustrel in “Provencal Colorado”, you really must visit the Conservatory in the former Mathieu Factory. Here everything is still ochre-coloured, from floor to ceiling. The contrast between the earthy colours and the hues of the pines is stunning and beautiful.

In this former ochre factory created by those who began the whole adventure in 1871, you can visit and discover basins, ovens, red and yellow ochre mills and a garden used to grow plants for dyeing purposes. The OKHRA Association is open to both the public and professionals for guided tours, training sessions (1 to 6 days on colours, coatings, sheens), and educational workshops for children during the school year and vacation, conferences, practical advice on how to use the hues. Temporary exhibitions are also available. See what’s scheduled, at the web site: www.okhra.com
Maximum number of people: 100 in two groups. Demonstration and initiation in the different techniques for using ochres and pigments. For adults and children. Max number of persons: 20. English, German, Spanish, Italian spoken. There’s also a boutique, numerous books on colours, flasks of pigments, binders, gums and more.
You can rent your bikes on the spot and head out to explore the village of Roussillon and the ochre landscapes of the Luberon.
