Palace of the Popes AVIGNON

This impressive fortress and sumptuous palace symbolizes the power of Christianity and the temporal and spiritual power once wielded by the Popes. It was the Pope’s official residence from the 14th century and is the world’s largest gothic palace. Tours available of the pope’s private apartments and various other sites - a space which is the equivalent in size to more than 4 gothic cathedrals! Today, the courtyard of the Palais des Papes is used to stage the famous Avignon festival.

The biggest Gothic Palace in the world. Seven Popes and two schismatic Popes lived in Avignon during the 14th century. The Palace was mainly built by two Popes: Benoît XII and Clément VI. Take a tour of the grand State Rooms where ceremonies and banquets were held, the chapels with their painted walls, the private Papal apartments and the terraces with their magnificent views of Avignon and the Rhône Valley. Visit the Museum (Musée de l'Oeuvre), inside the palace, included in the visit. This museum space has illustrated displays, interactive models, archaeological objects and documents which explain, in an entertaining and educational manner, how the palace was constructed and about its fabulous décor.
