Gardens at the Saint-André Abbey
Beautiful gardens inside the Saint André Fort and Abbey.
This benedictine and royal abbaye, founded in the Xth Century and situated within the impressive walls of the Fort Saint André, overlooks the Rhône River and the City of the Popes, which lies opposite. The terraced gardens, in the "Tuscany Renaissance" and "Mediterranean" style, are among the most beautiful gardens in France. They stretch between the remains of old romanesque churches and medieval gravestones, unveiling flowerbeds filled with old varities of roses, mediterranean plants, century-old pine and olive trees.
The terraces boast an exceptional view onto the Palace of the Popes, the Apilles and the Luberon moutain ranges, the Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail.
The Palace of the Abbaye, reshaped by Pierre Mignard, architect of King Louis XIV, reflects the magnificence and the elegance of the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries.
